 Euromillion Lottery International Scam

Back in 2010 Islanders were targeted by mailshots announcing that they had won a large amount of money on Euromillions and asking them for personal information and especially bank account details. A recent enquiry to the Jersey Gambling Commission suggests that a new scam is targeting Jersey residents using the Internet. Themed on Euromillions the advert/email states that Jersey residents can now play Euromillions online and asks people to register with their personal and bank account details to play.

Jersey residents cannot play the Lotto and Euromillions on line. This advert saying they can is a fraud.

Islanders should apply the following tests when receiving notifications of lottery themed wins:

  • How can I win a lottery prize if I haven't bought a ticket?
  • Never send money upfront to claim a lottery prize. Most genuine lotteries never ask for fees or taxes before claiming your winnings.
  • Never reveal your credit card or bank account details unless you are certain who it is you are dealing with.
  • Research. Tell friends and family if you think a letter or email might be a scam.
  • The National Lottery never tells winners how much they've won in an email. If it includes a value it is bogus.
  • Apply the golden rule: if it looks too good to be true it probably is.
